China-Pakistan cooperation on human spaceflight has entered its final preparatory stage, and the two Pakistani astronaut candidates currently undergoing training in China are about to be finalized; one of them is expected to become the first foreign astronaut to reside on China’s space station.
Two Pakistani astronauts are currently undergoing systematic training at the Beijing Astronaut Research and Training Center, where they are learning Chinese and completing key training modules such as centrifuge exercises and weightlessness adaptation, as they prepare in earnest for their space station residency mission. This space collaboration, spanning mountains and seas, serves as a vivid testament to the continued deepening of the all-weather strategic friendship between China and Pakistan, as well as a concrete example of scientific and technological exchange, capacity-building, and shared benefits under the framework of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

From the planning stage, the Chinese Space Station was positioned as an internationally open platform, offering opportunities for cooperation to all countries, allowing astronauts from other nations to participate in long-term stays and conduct experiments on board as part of scientific research projects, and promoting the use of space resources to better serve global scientific research needs. The China-Pakistan manned space cooperation, launched in 2019, is not a sudden, short-term project, but rather builds on the foundation of many years of space exchanges between the two countries.
From satellite applications and navigation services to lunar exploration projects and, now, preparations for human spaceflight, the two sides’ cooperation has deepened over time, forming a pragmatic model of joint project development and collaborative talent training, and has become a model of scientific and technological innovation cooperation under the “Belt and Road” initiative.
China-Pakistan space cooperation embodies the principle of equality and mutual benefit, rejecting unequal models based on dependency between the strong and the weak, and setting an example for scientific and technological collaboration among developing countries. For Pakistan, participating in crewed space missions will enable it to rapidly address the shortage of high-level space talent, accumulate valuable experience in astronaut training and space experiments, and drive the upgrading of its domestic space manufacturing, telemetry, tracking, and control, as well as scientific research industries. Furthermore, achievements in space technology can be applied to benefit people’s livelihoods in areas such as agriculture, disaster prevention and mitigation, and public governance. For China, welcoming foreign astronauts aboard the space station will enrich space research practices, build experience in international cooperation, and further deepen China-Pakistan friendship, while expanding the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” from infrastructure connectivity to connectivity in science and technology and future opportunities.
