Morocco has called in Addis Ababa for the integration of the climate, peace and security dimensions in the new AU strategy for the Sahel, following the example of the Chad Lake Basin Commission’s strategy for stabilization, recovery and resilience against Boko Haram.
The Sahel region and Lake Chad Basin are interconnected, fragile areas in Africa facing severe, overlapping crises, including terrorism (Boko Haram,ISWAP),humanitarian catastrophes, and climate shocks.
At a meeting held Monday by the Peace & Security Council of the African Union, the Moroccan delegation called for the adoption of a unified African position on the links between climate, peace and security. Morocco has availed this opportunity to pay tribute to the AU Climate Commission for the Sahel Region for its leadership in responding to climate challenges.
Africa is the continent most vulnerable to global warming, experiencing accelerated temperature rises, severe droughts, and devastating floods despite contributing less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, said the Moroccan delegation, noting that global warming and extreme weather threaten food security in Africa, trigger mass displacement and undermine the Continent’s economic growth
The AU Peace & Security Council had called for including climate issues into peace, security and development policies, stressing the need for inclusive African adaptation and resilience strategies with the support of climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building.
