African Union reaffirms leadership role in Sudan peace process

The African Union (AU) underscored its commitment to spearheading the peace process in Sudan,emphasizing that sustainable solutions must follow the principle of “African solutions to African problems.”

AU Commissioner for Political Affairs,Peace and Security,Bankole Adeoye,highlighted continuous coordination with the United Nations,through the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan to streamline efforts and avoid fragmented initiatives.

The African Union Peace and Security Council has developed a roadmap for ending the conflict,including high-level mechanisms to engage warring parties and civilian actors,with political and technical backing from the European Union. The AU’s leadership faces challenges from parallel international initiatives,notably the U.S.-led “Quad Mechanism,” which includes Saudi Arabia,Egypt,and the UAE.

Commissioner Adeoye stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire,national dialogue,and accountability for gross violations,while rejecting foreign interference. He also reaffirmed the AU’s broader priorities,including counterterrorism,conflict prevention,and support for member states in strengthening security and sovereignty.
