A driver was arrested after reportedly tasering a man following a hit-and-run on Stewart Avenue,Upminster

A driver has been arrested after reportedly tasering a man trying to stop him from leaving a hit-and-run scene.

Officers responded to reports of a car failing to stop following a crash in Stewart Avenue,Upminster at 4.20pm on Tuesday.

Witnesses told Havering Daily the car smashed into some bins before coming to a stop. When quick-thinking bystanders snatched the driver’s bag to stop him from leaving,he returned with a taser.

Police said a man in his 50s,was injured by a non-police taser. He was treated by paramedics.

A pedestrian,a woman in her 50s,was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Neither of the two injured was taken to the hospital.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘A man who is believed to be both the driver of the vehicle and the one who used the Taser remains in police custody.

‘He was swiftly arrested nearby on suspicion of causing injury via road traffic collision,failure to stop,grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm.’

There is an expected increase in police presence in the area over the coming days.
