The United States has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, signaling deeper alignment with Rabat ahead of a pivotal UN Security Council vote on Oct 30.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia,Massad Boulos, the US President’s special adviser for Arab and African affairs, said Washington is “genuinely optimistic” about reaching a final settlement based on Morocco’s sovereignty and autonomy proposal.

He described the upcoming vote on Resolution 2025 as “a very important milestone.”

Boulos stressed that the US is working closely with Morocco,Algeria, and other partners to craft language that “bridges positions as much as possible,” noting that the renewal of MINURSO’s mandate remains under discussion.

He reiterated that the Trump administration’s stance is “clear and unwavering”: Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is not in question, and its autonomy plan is viewed as “the best project.”

The adviser also hinted at broader regional implications, saying a lasting solution would ease tensions between Morocco and Algeria.

His comments follow months of US diplomatic engagement, including calls for Algerian flexibility and encouragement of investment in Morocco’s southern provinces.

The Security Council vote on October 30 could mark a turning point in the decades-long dispute, with Washington signaling readiness to push for a comprehensive settlement within weeks.
