Salah catapults Egypt to World Cup qualification, Ghana and Cape Verde close in

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah scored twice as Egypt sealed qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Djibouti in Casablanca on Wednesday,October 8.

The 33-year-old,who has now scored nine goals in the extended qualifying campaign,guided Egypt to an unassailable five-point lead over Burkina Faso in Group A. Salah,twice named African Footballer of the Year,struck in the 14th and 84th minutes after Ibrahim Adel opened the scoring just eight minutes in the game.

The result ensures Egypt’s fourth World Cup appearance,following previous qualifications in 1934,1990,2018,and now 2026.

Elsewhere,Ghana moved to the brink of qualification after thrashing the Central African Republic 5-0 in Meknes,Morocco,with goals from Thomas Partey,Mohammed Salisu,Alexander Djiku,captain Jordan Ayew,and Kamaldeen Sulemana. The Black Stars now lead Group I with 22 points and need just one point from their final match against Comoros to secure their spot.

In Group D,Cape Verde drew 3-3 with Libya in Tripoli,rallying from two goals down to stay two points clear of Cameroon. The Blue Sharks,with 20 points,will book their first-ever World Cup ticket if they beat Eswatini on next Monday,while Cameroon must win against Angola to stay in contention for a play-off place.
