US senior presidential advisor Massad Boulos has discussed the Sahara issue with Head of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Youssouf at the AU HQ in Addis Ababa.
In a post published on his X account,M. Boulos said he discussed with AUC chief “our shared commitment to advancing peace, conflict resolution, and humanitarian aid across the continent”.
He also voiced appreciation for the vital role of the AU in addressing conflicts and facilitating peace, including in Sudan, the eastern DRC,Libya,Somalia and the Sahel region.
Boulos talks with Chairperson of the AU Commission comes two weeks after his meeting with UN Sahara envoy Staffan de Mistura to reaffirm the clear U.S. position supporting the Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the only solution for the Sahara issue.
During his latest visit to Algeria within the frame of a Maghreb tour, the American presidential advisor reaffirmed U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory and support for the Autonomy Plan as the ONLY realistic solution to the decades-long conflict.
Boulos meetings with De Mistura and Head of the African Union Commission come ahead of the upcoming UN Security Council meeting expected to take pivotal decisions on the Sahara conflict.
In coordination with its major allies and veto holders at the UN Security Council,France and the United Kingdom, the United States is currently intensifying its efforts for the resolution of the Sahara conflict on the basis of the Moroccan Autonomy plan.
