President Donald Trump has confirmed that a young,influential right-wing activist who helped reelect him was fatally shot.

Charlie Kirk,31,who co-founded the youth organization Turning Point USA,was shot in the neck while speaking with students at Utah Valley University in Orem on Wednesday.

‘The Great,and even Legendary,Charlie Kirk,is dead,’ wrote Trump on his Truth Social platform at 4.40pm.

‘No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL,especially me,and now,he is no longer with us.

Vice President JD Vance wrote on X: ‘Eternal rest grant unto him,O Lord.’

Kirk’s death was also confirmed by his spokesman,Andrew Kolvet.

Trump announced that flags would be lowered to half staff.

‘In honor of Charlie Kirk,a truly Great American Patriot,I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M.,’ he wrote on Truth Social.

FBI Director Kash Patel around 6.30pm said that the ‘subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in custody’.

Patel did not provide additional details on the suspect.

Shortly afterward,Republican Governor Spencer Cox said a ‘person of interest’ was being interviewed and that an investigation is underway to ‘find this killer’.

‘This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation,’ said Cox.

‘I want to be very clear this is a political assassination.’

Utah authorities said that the shooter donned dark clothing and shot from a roof on campus from a distance away.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had announced a moment of silence for Kirk in Congress.

‘We ask everyone to pray for him and his family,’ Johnson told reporters.

‘This is detestable what’s happened. Political violence has become all too common in American society.’

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered his condolences to the Kirk family.

‘My thoughts this evening are with the loved ones of Charlie Kirk,’ he wrote on X.

‘It is heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband.

Who was Charlie Kirk?

More than 3,000 people attended Kirk’s event.The university last week cited the First Amendment and reinstated its ‘commitment to free speech,intellectual inquiry,and constructive dialogue’.University police chief Jeff Long said his department was in coordination with Kirk’s security team and tried to get ‘bases covered’ but ‘unfortunately today we didn’t,and because of that we have this tragic incident’.
