Chinese Maolong New Materials company and Moroccan Sinam Group (Global Steel) have joined forces and established a HIsmelt plant in Morocco.
HIsmelt is a smelting process for producing iron from iron ore using non-coking coal, which allows for the production of high-quality molten pig iron without the need for traditional agglomeration methods. This technology allows lower environmental impact and operational flexibility compared to conventional blast furnace methods.
The plant will benefit from Morocco’s abundant phosphate resources, with Sinam Group and its affiliates supplying over 600,000 tons of phosphate ore annually to Maolong.
The project will enhance Morocco’s regional supply chains and promote sustainable steelmaking globally. It is part of the Kingdom’s green steel strategy, leveraging the country’s renewable energy resources and decarbonization policy.
