Morocco’s women national football team defeated Congo DR 4-2 in their second match played Wednesday in Rabat at CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2024 taking place in the North African Kingdom.
Three goals of the Atlas Lionesses were scored by iconic captain Ghizlane Chebbak in the 25th minute,43rd minute, and 75th minute, while the fourth goal was netted by Yasmin M’Rabet in the 84th minute. The Congolese goals were scored by Merveille Kanjinga (6th minute) and Flavine Mawete (70th minute).
The Moroccan brilliant victory was much needed for the hosts who drew with Zambia in their opening match earlier in the week. The topsy-turvy game sparked to life early as DR Congo stunned the Moroccans with a rapid opener in the 6th minute through Merveille Kanjinga, who finished confidently after a well-weighted through ball from Naomie Kabakaba.
The Atlas Lionesses responded with Chebbak striking twice before the break, giving the Atlas Lionesses a deserved 2-1 lead at halftime. The second half brought more energy as both sides pressed for goals. Congolese substitute Flavine Mawete scored the equalizer in the 70th minute but Moroccan star Chebbak struck-back,scoring her third goal giving the Atlas Lionesses a 3-2 lead.
The Moroccans sealed the victory in the 83rd minute after Anissa Lahmari won a penalty, which was successfully converted by Yasmin M’Rabet to make it a 4-2 won.
Morocco’s victory came after Zambia had beaten Senegal 3-2 earlier on Wednesday, with both the North Africans and the Copper Queens now almost certain to qualify from Group A,but the Congolese are on the brink of an early exit after a second successive defeat.
The final round of group fixtures will see Morocco face Senegal and Zambia take on DR Congo on Saturday.
