Drivers blighted by the UK’s crumbling road network can let out a sigh of relief after the government announced a £92 billion improvement plan.

Potholes,never-ending road works and traffic delays are just some of the issues plaguing drivers up and down the country.

Now some respite is in the pipeline after the government gave a green light to more than 50 road and rail upgrades worth £92 billion of taxpayer money.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the investments are ‘long overdue’ and will ‘transform local communities and improve living standards across the country.’

The upgrades are set to make ‘every day journeys easier,’ Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said.

The Transport Secretary said: ‘Roads and railways are the backbone of our economy, which is why we are giving them the record funding boost they need, putting taxpayer’s money where it matters most and making every day journeys easier.

‘With over £92 billion investment, including the biggest ever boost for city regions in the north and Midlands,we’re delivering the schemes that fast-track economic growth and jobs, connect communities, and will help us build 1.5 million new homes,as we deliver our Plan for Change.

‘We’re forging ahead with the vital new transport infrastructure Britain needs, and improving what we’ve already got,to deliver a new era of renewal and opportunity.’

Dozens of other upgrades are also being considered.

However, some projects have been axed – the A12 Chelmsford to A120 improvement and the A47 Wansford to Sutton.

The motoring expert RAC welcomed the Spending Review money to maintain and improve local roads.

Simon Williams,RAC’s head of policy, said previously: ‘Local authorities now have a golden opportunity to end the cycle of merely filling potholes and instead begin to be much more proactive in their maintenance.’
