Algerian state media and the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) have drawn mockery for deliberately omitting references to Morocco, the host nation of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite Algeria’s national women’s team participating in the competition, official broadcasts and social media posts have avoided mentioning Morocco by name.
At a press conference where the coach of the Algerian squad was speaking,Algerian media covered the logo of Royal Air Maroc,an official sponsor of the African football federation CAF.
Leader of the Algerian team declined to feature in a group photo together with other teams in the square opposite Hassan tower in Rabat.
The logos of the Moroccan Football Federation and the tournament branding, which includes “Morocco 2025,” were either blurred, cropped out,or covered with black tape during press conferences and televised segments.
In one widely circulated image, the logo of Royal Air Maroc—an official tournament sponsor- was digitally replaced with that of TotalEnergies on FAF’s platforms.
The move shows the scale of hostility to Morocco exhibited by Algerian authorities. It also shows the spell of enmity towards Morocco to sports.
