The recent terrorist rocket attacks launched by the Algeria-backed Polisario armed militias from the buffer zone on Moroccan Saharan city Smara are the third of their kind after the blasts that rocked the same city in June 2025 and the deadly attacks perpetrated in October 2023.
These provocative and unjustified attacks show to the world that the mercenaries and their backers are refusing peace and must be held accountable for threatening regional stability.
The latest Smara attacks violate UN Security Council Resolution 2797 which calls on parties to the Sahara conflict to avoid any act that jeopardizes the political process. They will accelerate the American designation of the Polisario as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
The international community condemnation of these attacks adds more pressure on the Algerian military, which funds, arms and shelters the separatist group,to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 endorsing Autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
The United States is the first country to have denounced the Polisario aggressions. It was followed by the United Nations,France, the United Kingdom,Spain,Belgium,Czech republic,Bahrain,Qatar,Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates…
The outpouring of international solidarity with Morocco and support for the Kingdom’s actions to protect its territorial integrity means that time has come to scrap the buffer zone used by the mercenaries to launch their attacks against Morocco and to end the UN Mission in the Sahara in October 2026.
According to some experts, the mounting global condemnation of Polisario attacks may very likely push UN Security Council to issue a statement against the mercenaries or hold a meeting at the request at Morocco. The Council’s intervention would be another scathing takedown of Algerian rulers, sponsors of terrorism.
Irked by the Algerian regime connivance with the Polisario and terrorist groups in the Sahel to sow chaos in the region, the Trump administration has delivered a clear message to Algiers, warning the ruling junta that the status quo in the Sahara cannot continue and that time has come to resolve the five-decade regional dispute.
Following the Smara attacks,U.S. presidential senior advisor Massad Boulos has summoned Algerian ambassador to the U.S. Sabri Boukadoum to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts to advance peace and security in the region.
In his comment posted on X account, the U.S. official said the discussion, held in presence of U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Algeria Mark Schapiro, focused on U.S.-Algerian economic relationship and “engagement toward achieving a mutually agreeable solution to the Sahara dispute in line with UNSCR 2797,affirming that “it is time to reach a resolution”.
