African Lion 2026: Washington Lauds Morocco’s Rapid Response to Missing U.S. Servicemen

The United States has commended the swift response of the Moroccan authorities following the disappearance of two U.S. soldiers during the African Lion military exercise 2026 held in the Kingdom.


The body of one of the two missing servicemen has been recovered in the Atlantic Ocean,while the search is continuing for a second missing soldier.


“I wish to convey my sincere appreciation to the Moroccan authorities for their swift response,professionalism,and unwavering commitment in the search and rescue efforts,” said U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan in a comment on his X account.


Morocco’s “dedication reflects the strength of our partnership and shared humanity,” underlined the American diplomat.


He also offered his deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the soldier who tragically lost his life during African Lion. “My thoughts are with you during this time of profound grief. My thoughts are also with the family and loved ones of the missing soldier for whom search and rescue efforts are ongoing,” added the U.S. Ambassador.


The recovered body was that of 1st Lt. Kendrick Lamont Key Jr.,a 14A Air Defense Artillery officer who was one of two U.S. soldiers who fell off a cliff during a recreational hike in Morocco while off duty. He was 27 years old.


The two were reported missing on May 2 after participating in African Lion,an annual multinational military exercise held in Morocco.


Their disappearance triggered a search-and-rescue operation involving more than 600 personnel from the United States,Morocco and other military partners. The operation deployed frigates,vessels,helicopters and drones.
