Zambia reiterated on Thursday its firm and steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and Moroccanness of the Sahara.
It also welcomed the historic adoption on October 31,2025,by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2797,which enshrines, within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty, the Morocco-proposed autonomy plan as the only serious, credible, and lasting basis for reaching a political solution to the artificial dispute over the Sahara.
This stance was expressed in a joint Communiqué issued following talks in Rabat this Thursday between the Zambian Foreign Ministers,Mulambo Haimbe, who is currently on a working visit to Morocco and his Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita.
Haimbe also expressed his country’s support for the United Nations’ efforts to reach a solution to this regional dispute,as well as for the autonomy plan, deeming it the only credible, serious, and realistic solution for resolving this issue.
He further emphasized that this initiative provides a pragmatic and constructive basis for reaching a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution.
For his part,Bourita welcomed the positive development of ties between the two brotherly countries in recent years, facilitated in particular by the opening,in October 2020,of the Zambian Embassy in Rabat and its Consulate General in Laayoune.
The Zambian official also commended the strategic initiatives launched by King Mohammed VI in support of regional integration and development in Africa, highlighting in particular the importance of the Initiative of the Atlantic African States as well as the Royal Initiative for the Sahel enclaved countries.
These initiatives aim to strengthen regional integration, improve connectivity among African countries, and facilitate Sahel States’ access to the Atlantic Ocean, the Zambian foreign minister was quoted in the joint communiqué as saying.
During their talks, the two officials praised the momentum of South-South cooperation spearheaded by the Kingdom, deeming it an essential lever for bolstering African solidarity and promoting shared and sustainable development.
They also expressed their shared commitment to strengthening coordination within regional and international bodies to further enshrine this cooperation and optimize its impact in the service of the African continent’s interests.
They likewise reaffirmed the two countries’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in several sectors, and elevating bilateral partnership to new heights. In this connection, they identified a range of cooperation areas with significant potential, including
energy and mining, sustainable development, education and scholarships, scientific research and innovation,as well as health and social protection.
