Five international organizations,collectively known as the “Quintet,” on Wednesday,called for an urgent cessation of military escalation in Sudan,warning against the use of increasingly destructive methods of warfare.
The Quintet—comprising the African Union,Intergovernmental Authority on Development,League of Arab States,European Union,and United Nations—expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation,particularly in Sudan’s Kordofan region and Blue Nile State.
Reports of deadly drone strikes,sieges,attacks on civilian infrastructure,forced displacement,and restricted humanitarian access highlight the urgency of intervention. “The protection of civilians,civilian premises and critical national infrastructure is a fundamental obligation under international law,” the statement read.
The group stressed that international humanitarian law applies to all parties engaged in hostilities and called for “safe,rapid and unhindered humanitarian access to all areas in need.”
The Quintet warned that violations of international humanitarian law must not go unaddressed,insisting that perpetrators be held accountable. It further urged coordinated efforts to de-escalate the conflict,prevent the flow of weapons and fighters,and restore conditions conducive to civilian protection.
Reaffirming their support for Sudan’s sovereignty,unity,independence,and territorial integrity,the Quintet pledged to facilitate a Sudanese-owned,inclusive political dialogue aimed at ending the war and establishing a peaceful political transition.
