President Faure Gnassingbé of Togo is on an official visit to Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart,Vladimir Putin, this Wednesday,November 19.
The agenda of this diplomatic meeting is primarily focused on regional security issues, particularly the intensification of terrorist threats in the Sahel region, where the presence of the Africa Corps grants Moscow a strategic position in the fight against terrorism.
This dialogue is part of the ongoing strengthening of bilateral military ties, with the Duma having finalized the ratification of a military cooperation framework agreement last October (October 2025),which provides for the training of the Togolese Armed Forces (FAT) and intelligence sharing. Furthermore,Russia indicated its intention to open an embassy in Lomé,a strong signal of Togo’s growing strategic importance in Moscow’s African diplomacy.
Beyond defense matters,Faure Gnassingbé’s visit includes a significant economic component aimed at diversifying partnerships, with the presence of a private sector delegation. Discussions focus on new cooperation opportunities, including Russian investments in key projects for the Togolese economy, capitalizing on Lomé’s position as a sub-regional port hub.
A major issue is food security in West Africa and the sustainable supply of fertilizers,a sector where Russia is a key player. Togo seeks to obtain preferential quotas and strengthen technological cooperation for its fertilizer plant project, considering a bulk order involving several African countries to ensure a stable and affordable supply.
