At least eight people are believed to be dead after a parked car exploded at a red light outside a busy metro station in Delhi,India.
Police are on high alert,according to local media,after the blast injured more than a dozen other passersby.
Eight of the victims died en route to the hospital,according to local police,with 15 others thought to be in serious condition.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said the explosion happened as a vehicle was moving slowly before stopping at a red light.
‘An explosion happened in that vehicle,and due to the explosion,nearby vehicles were also damaged. Some people have died,and some have been injured in the incident,’ he said.
The vehicle was a Hyundai i20 car,which was moving and carrying three people,Sanjay Tyagi,spokesperson for Delhi City Police,told the BBC.
The parked car was near the Red Fort metro station,which is in the southern area of Delhi.

A previous owner of the car,named only as Salman,was arrested after the blast,NDTV reported.
Mangled bodies and the wreckage of several cars could be seen on a congested street near a metro station in the old quarter of Delhi,as police poured into the area to secure it and push back gathering crowds.
‘A slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light. An explosion happened in that vehicle,nearby vehicles were also damaged,’ Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters.

A large police cordon is in place while police investigate. It’s not been confirmed that the explosion was caused by a bomb.
An empty shell of the car and the wrangled wreckage of nearby vehicles were seen in a video shared on X.
Video footage on social media showed multiple ambulances rushing towards the scene,while firefighters worked to tackle the blaze.
Pawan Khera,Chairman of the media & publicity department of India’s Congress,said: ‘In this hour of grief,we stand with the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.
‘The government must ensure a thorough and speedy investigation into the incident.’
