The Sudanese army on Sunday repelled a major assault by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the city of Babnousa in West Kordofan, according to local witnesses.
The RSF reportedly launched artillery fire and advanced with combat vehicles, but were driven back by army troops who later released videos confirming control over the area. The Babnousa Emergency Room,a local relief body, stated that the army had successfully thwarted an attack on its 22nd Infantry Division, though it did not disclose details about casualties or damage.
The committee described Babnousa as a “ghost town,” noting that nearly 177,000 residents have fled amid continuous clashes between the rival forces. The RSF has not commented on the incident. The army has recently been conducting air supply drops to reinforce its troops in Babnousa, which remains a flashpoint in Sudan’s protracted conflict. Fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF,which erupted on 15 April 2023,has so far claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, with diplomatic efforts to end the war yielding little progress.
