RSF claims control of El Fasher in major blow to Sudanese army

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Sunday that they have seized full control of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, marking a significant turning point in the country’s ongoing civil war.

The group described the capture as a “pivotal moment” due to the city’s strategic and symbolic importance. The Sudanese army has yet to issue an official statement, while local resistance groups insist that fighting is still ongoing. Earlier, the RSF claimed to have overrun the headquarters of the army’s Sixth Infantry Division, the final military stronghold in Darfur, and released footage of its fighters celebrating outside the captured compound.

El Fasher’s fall,if confirmed, would represent a major setback for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and further deepen the humanitarian crisis gripping the region. The city has been under siege since May 2024,with thousands killed and civilians facing dire shortages of food, water, and medical aid. The wider conflict between the SAF and RSF,which began in April 2023,has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, leaving Sudan on the brink of collapse as international efforts to broker peace continue to falter.
