A woman is in a critical condition after being stabbed in the neck in what police have said was an ‘unprovoked attack’.

Djeison Rafael,21,has been charged with attempted muder following the attack at 9pm on Friday,in Birmingham city centre.

The victim,who is her 30s,remains in a critical condition.

West Midlands Police said: ‘We have tonight charged a man with attempted murder after a woman was stabbed in Birmingham.

‘Djeison Rafael,was charged following an incident in Smallbrook Queensway last night (7 November).

Start your day informed with Metro's News Updates newsletter or get Breaking News alerts the moment it happens.‘He has also been charged with two further assaults and possession of a blade.‘Rafael was arrested following the incident,which saw a woman in her 30s taken to hospital with a serious neck injury.‘Rafael,who is a Black British national,has been remanded to appear before magistrates in Birmingham on Monday 10th November 2025.’The stabbing,outside Boots,is the third to have taken place in a month,around the Bullring shopping area.On October 6,a fight broke out between around ten males,leaving a 17-year-old with a knife wound.Six days later,another 17-year-old was stabbed near the shopping area’s Burger King store. A boy,aged 16,was later arrested on suspicion of assault.A shop manager,who works just a few doors down from the stabbing outside Boots,and asked not to be named,said the city centre felt ‘increasingly dangerous’.Only this morning,twelve hours after the attack,she said a man had walked into her store ‘covered in blood’.She said he was ‘acting strange’,that she suspected he was on drugs and alerted security.Police are not looking for any other suspects in relation to the attack.The shop manager said: ‘It feels increasingly dangerous – you’re more aware of it.‘We had fireworks being set off everywhere recently by a big group of people. It’s definitely not a nice time around here.’West Midlands Police were called to Smallbrook Queensway,Birmingham,shortly before 9pm on Friday after reports of a stabbing.Officers are carrying out inquiries near the Bullring shopping centre – a busy part of the city centre.A police tent remained on the pavement this morning,just outside the Bullring and opposite the main entrance to New Street railway station.Detective Inspector James Nix,said: ‘We believe this was an unprovoked attack and are working to understand why it happened.‘We will have officers in the area today to continue our investigation and provide reassurance.‘We are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.”A man in his 20s was arrested near to the scene and is in custody following the stabbing in Birmingham city centre (Picture: British News and Media / Alamy Live News)The force added in a statement: ‘A man is in custody after a stabbing in Birmingham last night. We were called to Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm after reports of a stabbing.‘A woman in her 30s was taken to hospital with a serious neck injury where she remains in a critical condition.‘A man in his 20s was arrested close to the scene and is in custody at this time.‘Our officers are at the scene carrying out enquiries as we try to establish the exact circumstances of what happened.’
