Libya’s Attorney General has ordered the detention of Ali Al-Abed,the Acting Minister of Education and head of the national curriculum centre, over allegations of irregularities and negligence in school textbook contracts for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Prosecutors reported that investigations revealed violations in procurement processes that undermined the public interest and compromised the right to education, with nearly two million students affected by delays in textbook delivery despite a formal education strategy.
The Audit Bureau also confirmed multiple breaches in the printing and supply chain for school and technical books, prompting real-time oversight of all related financial transactions from 19 October. Al-Abed’s detention leaves three critical ministries — Education,Labour, and Civil Service — without leadership,as he previously held these roles in an acting capacity within the Government of National Unity. The development underscores heightened scrutiny over public sector governance and accountability within Libya’s transitional administration.
