
Egypt will inaugurate the first phase of the East Cairo Monorail on 9 November,marking a transformative step in Greater Cairo’s transport modernization agenda.
Announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Transport,Kamel El-Wazir,during the second Cairo Forum,the project forms part of a broader national vision to enhance connectivity between Cairo,New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital.
Coinciding with the trial operation of the country’s new high-speed electric train,the launch underscores Egypt’s strategic commitment to sustainable urban mobility,energy efficiency and congestion reduction across the capital region.
Stretching 56.5 kilometres from Stadium Station in Nasr City to the Operations and Control Centre in the New Administrative Capital,the monorail will serve 22 stations and integrate seamlessly with Metro Line 3 and the Light Rail Transit network.
Built by a consortium including Alstom,Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors,the fully electric,driverless system will operate trains capable of carrying 560 passengers at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour,supported by advanced safety,digital guidance and accessibility systems.
As Egypt prepares for the full build-out of a 100-kilometre monorail network across 35 stations,this inaugural phase signals a bold stride toward a smarter,cleaner and more connected urban future,harmonizing modern engineering with the pulse of a growing metropolis.
