The United Nations has sounded the alarm over what it calls an “unfolding catastrophe” in El Fasher,North Darfur, following the city’s capture by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Tuesday,October 28 that health services have collapsed entirely, while food and water supplies are running out. The RSF’s takeover last week, after the Sudanese Armed Forces’ withdrawal, has sparked widespread looting and ethnically targeted violence, further deepening an already critical humanitarian crisis. Hospitals, including the Saudi Hospital — the city’s main medical centre — have ceased operations following attacks and the abduction of medical personnel.
Once a refuge for more than half a million displaced people,El Fasher is now gripped by lawlessness, with residents trapped and unable to access essential supplies. Aid agencies are urging the creation of safe humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians and deliver aid.
The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF,which began in April 2023,has displaced millions and pushed vast areas of the country toward famine, with El Fasher now emerging as one of the most desperate flashpoints of the war.
