On Wednesday,October 29,2025,the European Union, alongside France,Lithuania, and Denmark, has called for urgent de-escalation in Sudan following the Rapid Support Forces’ (RSF) capture of El-Fasher,the capital of the Darfur region.
In a joint statement,EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Hadja Lahbib condemned the targeting of civilians based on ethnicity, describing it as evidence of the RSF’s brutality. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts for a lasting ceasefire, humanitarian access, and accountability for war crimes.
France’s Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the intensification of the RSF’s offensive since 26 October, warning of worsening humanitarian conditions and citing reports of atrocities, including summary executions in El-Fasher and Bara. Lithuania and Denmark echoed these concerns, describing the situation as “unbearable” and urging the RSF to protect civilians while granting immediate, unhindered humanitarian access. Both nations demanded an end to hostilities and accountability for mass atrocities.
The RSF has been accused by Sudanese authorities and international organisations of committing massacres, arbitrary arrests, and forced displacements during its recent assault on El-Fasher. The United Nations earlier called for a “safe corridor” for civilians to flee the city, with reports suggesting that as many as 2,000 people were killed between 26 and 27 October. The RSF,however, denied the allegations, claiming it was clearing the city of remaining army and allied forces. The ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and the RSF,which began in April 2023,has killed thousands and displaced over 15 million people despite repeated mediation attempts.
