The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has selected Libya as the host nation for the “Flintlock 26” military exercise, marking the first time the country will stage the annual regional drills.
AFRICOM Deputy Commander Lt. Gen. John Brennan confirmed during a visit to Libya that the exercise—set for next spring near Sirte—will bring together military units from both eastern and western Libya to strengthen security cooperation and advance efforts to unify the nation’s divided armed forces.
Brennan emphasized that the drills will not only focus on countering extremist threats but also on building the institutional capacity required to stabilize the country and consolidate national defense structures.
During his fourth visit to Libya,Brennan met with key figures including Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah,Operation Dignity commanders, and senior intelligence officials from both Tripoli and the east. He underscored that Libya’s vast economic potential and security development depend on cohesive national military leadership.
AFRICOM described “Flintlock 26” as a platform for empowering Libyan forces to reinforce sovereignty, foster internal unity, and position the country as a regional partner in counterterrorism and stability operations.
