A high-level delegation from Burundi’s National Independent Human Rights Commission is conducting a week-long study visit to Morocco to examine the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) operational framework and best practices. The visit, running from October 8 to 14,focuses on monitoring mechanisms, complaints processing, and capacity building strategies employed by Morocco’s human rights institution.
Commission President Martin Blaise Nyaboho leads the Burundian delegation, accompanied by Vice-President Gerard Rugemintwaza,Executive Bureau Secretary Béatrice Nkurunziza, and members Gloriose Nimenya and Jean Bosco Manirambona. The exchange program reflects CNDH’s commitment to sharing expertise with African counterparts in advancing continental human rights protection.
At a meeting with CNDH executives,Nyaboho emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two nations’ human rights institutions, particularly in leveraging CNDH’s expertise in protection mechanisms, surveillance systems, complaint management, and capacity development for human rights practitioners.
CNDH President Amina Bouayach characterized Morocco’s human rights experience as a distinctly African model available to continental human rights defenders. She highlighted the significance of this cooperation phase between African national institutions, focusing on exchanging best practices and developing joint initiatives that enhance human rights promotion and protection across Africa.
The delegation’s program encompasses comprehensive briefings on CNDH’s operational structure, including human rights protection mechanisms, violation monitoring systems, complaint processing procedures, communication strategies, and human rights education initiatives. Particular attention focuses on interaction with international mechanisms, especially accreditation processes with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions.
Scheduled activities include meetings with civil society organizations active in human rights advocacy and a field visit to the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima Regional Human Rights Commission. This regional exposure provides insights into CNDH’s decentralized approach to human rights monitoring and community engagement across Morocco’s diverse territories.
