UN 4th Committee: Growing global support for Morocco’s Sahara autonomy plan

International momentum behind Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara region gained prominent display at the United Nations Fourth Committee meeting in New York, where multiple petitioners highlighted unprecedented global backing for the kingdom’s sovereignty proposal. The committee heard a testimony emphasizing that 124 countries now support the Moroccan autonomy plan as the pathway to regional stability and shared prosperity.

Peruvian politician and jurist Martha Chávez Cossío characterized the international support as unprecedented, noting that the growing coalition views Morocco’s realistic and pragmatic initiative as the sole solution to definitively resolve the regional dispute. She emphasized that approximately thirty nations have demonstrated their recognition by establishing consular representations in Laâyoune and Dakhla, translating a clear acknowledgment of Morocco’s legitimate sovereignty over its southern provinces.

Spanish journalist Javier Fernández Arribas described a “global consensus” supporting Morocco’s position, with major powers including Spain,Germany,France, the United States, and the United Kingdom endorsing the autonomy framework presented by Morocco in 2007. The director of the Atalayar news outlet noted that these nations actively support the political solution outlined in Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2756.

Luxembourg’s Dr. Henri Diederich characterized the Moroccan initiative as more than political proposal, calling it a human project developed through decades of dialogue with local populations. He emphasized that the plan enables southern province residents to manage local affairs while respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

French professor Christophe Boutin observed that the international community increasingly recognizes that resolution must occur within Morocco’s sovereignty framework, while those perpetuating the artificial conflict remain in denial about evolving global positions reflected in increasingly precise Security Council parameters.
