The Sahara city of Laâyoune is preparing to implement a comprehensive Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan spanning fifteen years, addressing growing transportation demands while supporting the city’s socio-economic development goals. State authorities and local collectivities have jointly committed to developing this strategic framework, designed to manage increasingly diverse mobility needs across the regional capital, reported La Vie Economique on its website.

The 2.37-million-dirham project will select a consulting firm on October 13th to execute multiple phases including data collection, diagnostic analysis with objective formalization, mobility modeling tool development, scenario definition, and final implementation planning. The comprehensive approach encompasses integrated traffic circulation and parking management strategies.

The study’s primary scope covers Laâyoune’s entire 3,000-hectare urban area, with potential extensions to neighboring zones including Foum El Ouad and El Marsa communes, identified as significant sources of recurring travel patterns. This broader regional perspective acknowledges interconnected transportation flows beyond municipal boundaries.

The mobility plan represents systematic planning methodology addressing both current transportation challenges and future urban growth projections. Local decision-makers emphasize sustainable development principles while responding to resident aspirations for improved connectivity and transportation efficiency.

Implementation strategies will consider diverse transportation modes, infrastructure development priorities, environmental impact mitigation, and integration with existing urban planning initiatives. The fifteen-year timeline allows for phased implementation responding to demographic changes and economic development patterns.

This initiative aligns with Morocco’s broader urban development strategies, particularly significant given Laâyoune’s strategic position in the kingdom’s southern regions. The city’s growing importance requires sophisticated transportation planning to support continued expansion while maintaining livability standards,La Vie Economique commented.

The mobility framework represents municipal commitment to evidence-based planning processes, ensuring transportation infrastructure development meets both immediate needs and long-term sustainability objectives for Morocco’s expanding southern urban centers.
