Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection said on Monday it has referred a report to the public prosecutor following the deaths of eight women at Hassan II Hospital in Agadir in mid-September,an incident that triggered public protests and renewed scrutiny of the country’s healthcare system.
The ministry said it has provisionally suspended staff implicated in the case, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations. The decision follows internal inquiries, whose findings were forwarded to judicial authorities.
The deaths sparked demonstrations in Agadir and other cities, with protesters demanding accountability and improvements in public health services. Activists say the incident helped galvanize a broader youth-led movement, with Gen Z organizers increasingly focusing on systemic issues in health and education.
In its statement, the ministry emphasized its commitment to transparency and to upholding the rights of all parties involved. It reiterated its pledge to improve the quality of care in public hospitals as part of wider reforms to the national health system.
Authorities said they would continue to inform the public as the investigation progresses.
