A father has been busted after his nine-year-old son fatally shot his five-year-old daughter using an AR-style rifle that he allegedly left in the boy’s bedroom.
Irvin Ramos-Jimenez,33,left his rifle high on a shelf in the closet of his son’s room in Phoenix,Arizona,according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The young boy accidentally shot his sister,Layla Ramos,in the torso at night on June 3. The boy had ‘gained access to an unsecured AR-style rifle’,according to the attorney’s office.
Layla’s family took her to a psychiatric hospital and she was transferred to a trauma hospital,where she was pronounced dead,said the Phoenix Police Department.

First responders initially received a call to the psychiatric hospital for a stabbing. But investigators determined that Layla had been shot.
The dad reportedly went to his home near 7th Avenue and Broadway Boulevard,afterward to watch over his other children that he left there with the rifle.

Ramos-Jimenez was arrested on a weapons offence at the time. He was also deemed a prohibited possessor,which means he was barred legally from possessing or owning a firearm or weapon for lethal use.
On Wednesday,he was indicted in connection with Layla’s death.
Ramos-Jimenez has been charged with one count of child abuse,one class three dangerous felony,a domestic violence offence,a felony charge for misconduct involving weapons and a class four felony for unlawfully possessing a firearm,according to Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.
His trial has been scheduled to begin on March 2,2026.
The GoFundMe page had raised more than $10,000 as of this week.
