Shoppers and staff were evacuated from Cavendish Square in Cape Town on Tuesday after an extractor fan caught alight,sparking a fire.
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Edward Bosch said that just after midday,they received a call about a fire on one of the mall’s parking levels.
“Upon arrival,crews discovered smoke issuing from the roof of the mall. Law enforcement was requested to assist with evacuating users from the building,” said Bosch.
Fire crews managed to locate the seat of the fire,which was on the P3 parking level.

Cavendish Square Centre manager Faizah Behardien said emergency services “responded promptly and successfully contained” the fire,with no injuries reported.

“The mall was evacuated as a precautionary measure,as the safety of all tenants,staff,and shoppers remains a top priority,” said Behardien.
Behardien said they were able to determine that the fire started in one of the tenant’s extractor systems.

Cavendish Square has resumed trading as usual.
