Meanwhile Eddie Dempsey, the general secretary of the RMT union, said his members were ‘absolutely furious’ at the way TfL had handled their demands.

He said that the union ‘took no pleasure’ in disrupting people’s lives but that there is a ‘crisis in industrial relations’.

‘We want to make some progress around some issues that are really key to our people’,he told GB News.

The Tube will be suspended between Monday and Thursday inclusive, while the DLR is not running on Tuesday and Thursday.

What TfL services are open today?

Most of the Elizabeth line, the majority of the Overground routes, buses and the tram are running today. The Mildmay Overground line has no southbound service from Willesden Junction to Shepherd’s Bush.Commuters can also use Santander,Lime,Forest and Voi bikes as normal, although some bike routes are reportedly ‘dangerously’ packed.Metro’s head of newsletters Sophie Laughton said Hyde Park on a bike was ‘a death trap.’Commuters said cycle lanes were overcrowded as well as the strike week kicked off (Picture: EPA)‘So many inexperienced cyclists doing dangerous things at 16mph and traffic was the worst I’ve ever seen it,’ she said.Meanwhile,National Rail services are running as usual.

Is the Elizabeth line affected by the strikes today?

The Elizabeth line is up and running today, but trains are likely to be busier than usual, and there are some delays on it unrelated to the strike.Whilst I’ve always appreciated the vast curved caverns of the Elizabeth Line aesthetically, they’ve always seemed hugely oversized for the numbers using it that I’ve seen. Until today that is. As the only working line across London today,it handled huge crowds- which I think… pic.twitter.com/8IXH4anTq8— Paul Powlesland (@paulpowlesland) September 9,2025Trains running between Shenfield and Romford are running at a reduced speed until midday over a defective track at Harold Wood. This means trains could be cancelled or delayed by up to 20 minutes,National Rail warned.TfL said today: ‘While other services will be operating,we’re expecting them to be busy and there may be instances where stations with shared Tube services face disruption, such as many in the central section of the Elizabeth line.’One passenger said: ‘At least Elizabeth line is running this morning, but my god it’s rammed.’Uber Boats are one of the best things to happen to London in the last decade. Glorious way to travel at any time of the year, but a life saver during this stupid Tube strike. Along with Lime,it’s made the city totally workable when the unions decide to be recalcitrant. pic.twitter.com/4b7Potd8FS— Sebastian Payne (@SebastianEPayne) September 8,2025But another commuter had a different experience on the Lizzy line this morning. They said: ‘I left home early because of the tube strike. The Elizabeth Line is fine and now I’m super early like a weirdo.’Some passengers chose the scenic route to work – the River Thames boats, including Uber boats.

Why is the Tube strike happening?

Members of RMT,who work as drivers, signallers and in maintenance, voted in favour of the strike action after concerns over ‘extreme fatigue.’They are calling for a 32-hour work week, which the union described as a ‘small reduction in the working week in order to help reduce fatigue and the ill-health effects of long-term shift work on our members.’RMT’s general secretary Eddie Dempsey has called on the London Mayor Sadiq Khan to step in after ‘a total collapse of industrial relations on London Underground.’The London Mayor said this afternoon: ‘I share the frustrations of everyone whose journey has been disrupted by the strikes today. My message remains clear: I urge the RMT to get around the table with TfL so this dispute can be resolved. Please continue to check the TfL Go App before you travel.’
