HRC: Forty countries reiterate steadfast backing to Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara

Some forty countries have reiterated in Geneva their firm support for Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory and commended Morocco’s autonomy plan offering a “realistic” political solution to the decades-long Sahara conflict

In a joint statement read out Tuesday by the Delegate of Central African Republic at the 60th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC),these countries hailed the opening of Consulates of several countries in the Moroccan Saharan cities of Dakhla and Laâyoune,saying the move is strengthening economic cooperation and investments for the benefit of local populations,contributing to regional and continental development.

“The Sahara issue is a political dispute handled by the Security Council that recognizes the pre-eminence of the Autonomy Initiative presented by Morocco as credible and serious for a definitive political solution to this regional dispute over the Sahara,” the statement stated.

They reaffirm support for the efforts engaged to relaunch the UN-led political process on the basis of the Geneva round-tables format in line with Security Council resolutions,in particular R-2756 calling on the parties to the Sahara conflict to find a political,realistic and lasting solution to this regional dispute.

The settlement of the Sahara issue will boost regional integration and development,said the joint statement,noting that the Security Council recognizes the role played by the National and Regional Human Rights Commissions in Dakhla and Laayoune.

It also lauded the constructive interaction between Morocco and the UN human rights system,in particular the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR),for the promotion and respect of human rights.

The forty-nation coalition spans multiple continents,demonstrating Morocco’s successful diplomatic outreach beyond traditional allies. This broad support includes African,Arab,Caribbean,and Pacific nations,reflecting Morocco’s strengthened international partnerships and the effectiveness of its diplomatic strategy.
