In a renewed show of diplomatic and strategic alignment,Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared the Republic of Congo a “reliable and time-tested friend,” highlighting the Central African nation as a key entry point for Moscow’s growing influence across the continent.

The statement came during Putin’s recent meeting with Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso in Beijing, where both leaders participated in commemorations of World War II’s end. “Cooperation with Congo remains a key priority of our foreign policy in Africa,” Putin affirmed, citing regular personal contact and growing bilateral initiatives. Russia has significantly expanded its presence in Africa, leveraging energy, education, and military partnerships to establish footholds in strategic regions. Congo stands out, with a series of landmark agreements signed over the past year — including a joint oil pipeline project connecting port city of Pointe-Noire to Makoulou Pichot near capital Brazzaville, and cooperation on nuclear energy and naval defense.

In education,Russia has pledged to increase the number of Congolese students receiving training in Russian institutions, further anchoring people-to-people ties. Observers note that these moves reflect Russia’s broader strategy to counter Western influence in Africa by forging long-term partnerships rooted in mutual infrastructure and security goals. A September 2024 decree revealed Russia’s dominant 90% stake in the new oil pipeline venture — underscoring Moscow’s commitment to both investment and control. As geopolitical tensions shift globally,Congo has emerged as one of Russia’s most consistent African allies, helping shape the Kremlin’s ambitions on the continent.
