Airbus Helicopters will provide Morocco ten H225M Caracal multi-role tactical transport helicopters, according to press reports, saying the deal has been finally sealed after marathon negotiations.

Morocco’s interest in the H225M dates back to December 2021 as the country seeks to modernize its helicopter fleet and replace its SA330 Puma helicopters. But the negotiations were suspended after diplomatic tensions heightened between Rabat and Paris.

By September 2024,discussions resumed with reports on advanced negotiations. Despite high-level talks, including Airbus CEO Bruno Even attending a state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron, the deal remained pending. Negotiations focused on helicopter configurations and pricing.

Airbus Helicopters proposed establishing a Maintenance,Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) center in Morocco to support operations and access the West African market.

The H225M,a long-range tactical transport helicopter,is designed for missions like combat search and rescue (CSAR),troop transport, and disaster relief, with capabilities including a 1,000 km range, advanced avionics, and optional armaments like the HForce weapon system.

Morocco’s acquisition of the H225M Caracal aligns with broader defense modernization efforts, including the acquisition of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and F-16 Block 70/72 Viper fighter aircraft. These initiatives reflect Morocco’s commitment to strengthening its military capabilities to counter regional security threats.
