Moroccan mining group Managem said it has officially commenced gold production at its Boto mine in southeastern Senegal,in an investment that totalled 350 million euros.
Located in the Kédougou region,the Boto mine is expected to produce an average of 160,000 ounces of gold annually over its first three years,with total reserves estimated at 1.8 million ounces.
The project represents an investment of €350 million and is projected to operate for 12 years.
The mine features an open-pit operation with a capacity to extract 35 million tons of ore per year,supported by a processing plant capable of handling 2.75 million tons annually.
The site also includes a 23 MW power station,water and residue dams,fuel depot,airstrip,housing facilities,and a dedicated road network.
During the construction phase,the project created over 2,500 jobs,with 90% filled by Senegalese workers.
In its operational phase,it is expected to generate more than 1,500 direct and indirect jobs,contributing to local economic development.
