AU/PSC reaffirms support for Libya’s sovereignty, calls for national dialogue and ceasefire

The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,underscoring support for a nationally owned political process and national reconciliation.

In a communiqué issued after a high-level meeting,the Council called for inclusive and transparent presidential and parliamentary elections to be held without delay. It also urged the unification of Libyan institutions,reinforcement of political and social cohesion,and an end to the country’s prolonged transitional period. Expressing grave concern over the security situation—particularly the armed clashes in Tripoli last May—the council demanded an immediate ceasefire,disarmament of non-State armed groups,protection of civilians,and accountability for human rights violations.

The Council firmly rejected all forms of foreign interference,calling for the unconditional withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan soil. It welcomed international efforts backing Libya’s political transition and reiterated support for the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and the implementation of disarmament,demobilisation,and reintegration (DDR) programmes.

The AU also raised alarm over violations of the UN arms embargo and the mismanagement of Libya’s frozen assets,urging stronger monitoring and accountability measures. On the humanitarian front,the Council condemned the abuse of African migrants and refugees in Libya and called for the closure of inhumane detention centres. It further advocated for the reactivation of the AU-UN-EU Tripartite Task Force on Migration and accelerated steps toward opening the AU Liaison Office in Tripoli,alongside appointing a continental Special Envoy on Migration.
