Ukraine has pledged to support Ghana’s border security efforts with advanced drone technology and combat-tested expertise, following a recent high-level conversation between President John Dramani Mahama and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
With extremist violence spreading southward from the Sahel,Ghana’s northern border with Burkina Faso has become increasingly vulnerable. Over 250 unapproved border routes have been identified, used for smuggling and potentially by armed groups. To counter these threats,President Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine is ready to provide its advanced drone capabilities, developed during its ongoing war with Russia,to assist Ghana in securing its borders. “Ghana is interested in our technologies, the production of various types of drones, and the experience Ukraine has gained during this war,” Zelenskyy said, adding that “Ghana is ready to finance our production, and we are ready to help our partners secure their borders.”
The two leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, including the creation of a food logistics hub in Ghana. This initiative aligns with Mahama’s “Feed Ghana Programme” and aims to reduce food imports and improve post-harvest storage. A Ukrainian ministerial delegation will soon visit Accra to finalize agreements on defense, agriculture, and digital cooperation. Zelenskyy also extended an invitation for President Mahama to visit Ukraine, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. Accra has maintained a consistent and principled stance condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine since 2022.
