Tripoli played host to a high-level ministerial meeting on Tuesday,July 8,bringing together Interior ministers from Italy,Greece,Malta, and representatives from the European Union and international institutions to address the mounting challenges of illegal migration.
Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah underscored the urgency of the situation, stressing that human trafficking networks and armed groups exploiting migration are a grave threat to both national and regional security. He announced that Libya is developing a comprehensive national migration plan in coordination with international partners, with a focus on dismantling smuggling networks, securing borders, and restoring state authority in lawless regions.
Acting Minister of Interior Emad Al-Trabelsi revealed that the plan will commence with voluntary repatriation efforts, followed by the deportation of migrants deemed to pose social or security risks.
He estimated that Libya currently hosts between three to four million undocumented migrants and called for deeper cooperation with the European Union, including a formal migration management agreement.
The Ministry of Interior’s strategy includes strengthening border and internal security, repatriation of undocumented individuals, and legal regularization for migrants essential to the labor market. The summit concluded with a united call for a durable international partnership grounded in shared responsibility,long-term planning, and mutual respect.
