Greece has deployed naval vessels off the coast of Libya in response to a recent surge in irregular migration across the central Mediterranean,Greek and Turkish media reported this week.
According to the Greek Ministry of Defense, the deployment includes warships and surveillance assets aimed at monitoring and deterring human smuggling operations originating from Libya.
The move comes amid growing concerns in Athens over increased migrant arrivals on Greek islands and the mainland in recent months.
The Greek say their Navy’s presence near Libyan waters is part of a broader effort to strengthen maritime security and prevent illegal crossings. The operation is being coordinated with the Hellenic Coast Guard and other European partners.
Libya remains a key departure point for migrants and asylum seekers attempting to reach Europe, often via dangerous sea routes.
The United Nations and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned of deteriorating conditions in Libyan detention centers and the risks faced by migrants at sea.
The Greek government has not disclosed the exact number or type of vessels involved in the deployment, but officials emphasized that the operation is defensive in nature and complies with international maritime law.
The move has drawn attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, where Greece and Turkey have competing interests, including in Libya.
