Morocco’s national electricity production increased by 6.5% during the first four months of 2025,accelerating from 3% growth recorded in the same period last year, according to the Financial Studies and Forecasts Directorate (DEPF).

The improvement was primarily driven by strong performance in private electricity production, which increased 8.1%,and the National Electricity and Potable Water Office (ONEE),which achieved 10.5% growth. This combined expansion demonstrates the effectiveness of Morocco’s diversified energy generation strategy.

However, renewable energy production under Law 13-09 contracted by 13.9% after recording substantial growth of 38.6% in the previous year. This decline highlights the variable nature of renewable energy output and the continuing challenges in maintaining consistent clean energy generation.

Morocco’s electricity trade balance showed mixed results during the period. Import volumes decreased 4.4% through April 2025,reversing the 15.1% increase recorded a year earlier. Export volumes declined 14.4% overall, though the country experienced significant export growth during March and April 2025,with increases of 125.9% and 27.6% respectively.

The improvement in recent months suggests potential strengthening of Morocco’s position as a regional electricity exporter. Net electricity demand increased 5.3% through April 2025,compared to 3% growth in the same period of 2024.

The data reflects Morocco’s ongoing energy transition efforts, balancing traditional generation methods with renewable sources while maintaining grid stability. The country continues developing its energy infrastructure to meet growing domestic demand while positioning itself as a key electricity provider in the North African region.

These figures indicate sustained economic activity requiring increased energy consumption across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
