Sudan teeters on brink of genocide amid mounting civilian deaths and foreign meddling

The United Nations has warned that Sudan faces a “very high” risk of genocide,as the civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to devastate the country.

Senior UN official Virginia Gamba highlighted ethnically motivated attacks by the RSF and allied militias against groups like the Zaghawa,Masalit, and Fur in Darfur and Kordofan, calling the situation a breeding ground for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Since the conflict erupted in April 2023,tens of thousands have been killed and over 13 million displaced, triggering what the UN deems the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The violence escalated further this week when a drone strike — blamed by observers on the army — hit Al-Mujlad Hospital in West Kordofan, killing over 40 people, including children and medics.

In a separate but related development, the Sudanese government has also accused Kenya of facilitating weapons shipments from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the RSF. Kenya was also criticized for hosting RSF-linked leaders who declared a rival government in Nairobi earlier this year. The UAE has repeatedly denied involvement, despite mounting reports from international observers alleging otherwise. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged a halt to arms flows into Sudan, warning that foreign interference is prolonging and intensifying the bloodshed. As both sides dig in,the international community faces mounting pressure to act before Sudan’s catastrophe becomes irreversible.
