The United Nations has condemned the alarming scale of sexual violence unfolding in Sudan’s conflict,as the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) enters its third year.

Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on Thursday,June 19,the UN’s acting Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan,Kristine Hambrouck, described horrifying reports of rape, sexual slavery, and abductions, disproportionately affecting women and girls, though men and boys have also suffered in silence. She stressed the urgent need to end such atrocities and provide survivor-centred support.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023,has devastated Sudan, particularly in regions like Darfur and the contested city of El Fasher. According to recent UN findings, sexual and gender-based violence is escalating, with most reported incidents traced to RSF-controlled displacement camps. A UN fact-finding mission has also accused both warring parties of using heavy weaponry in civilian areas and manipulating humanitarian aid, further worsening the crisis.

Despite insecurity and bureaucratic barriers hampering humanitarian operations, the UN reaffirmed its commitment to a survivor-centered approach. Hambrouck paid tribute to the bravery of survivors and the critical work of Sudanese women-led organizations, calling for urgent action to ensure justice, restore dignity, and guarantee that no survivor is left behind. She emphasized that sexual violence in conflict must never be normalized, dismissed,or forgotten.
