Uranext,a Moroccan startup backed by the InnovX innovation ecosystem of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and affiliated with the OCP Group,is set to launch the country’s first uranium concentrate production facility,LeDesk news outlet reported.
The plant,to be located in the commune of Moulay Abdellah near El Jadida, will produce “yellowcake” (U₃O₈),a concentrated form of uranium extracted from phosphoric acid. This marks a strategic milestone in Morocco’s emerging nuclear materials sector.
According to Le Desk, the regulatory process for the project officially began on May 29,2025. The initial investment is estimated at 100 million US dollars. The facility will focus on extracting uranium from phosphate resources,a process that aligns with Morocco’s vast phosphate reserves and the OCP Group’s industrial capabilities.
This initiative positions Morocco to enter the global nuclear supply chain, leveraging its natural resources and growing technological infrastructure. It also reflects the country’s broader interest in developing nuclear-related industries for both energy and strategic materials.
The project is still in its early stages, pending regulatory approvals and environmental assessments.
