Morocco expressed commitment to making the 2030 FIFA World Cup a global benchmark for environmental sustainability and social inclusion, head of the tournament’s organizing committee Fouzi Lekjaa said.
The World Cup,to be co-hosted with Spain and Portugal,is being described as a “Green World Cup,” he told a conference at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) on the theme “2030 World Cup,World Climate.”
Fouzi Lekjaa, who is also Morocco’s Minister Delegate for the Budget and President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF),outlined the country’s ambitious sustainability agenda for the event which he described as a unique opportunity to accelerate Morocco’s transition toward a more sustainable and equitable development model.
The Moroccan strategy for the 2030 World Cup is built around three key pillars, namely massive investment in renewable energy to power sports infrastructure, innovative water resource management, ensuring efficient and sustainable usage and advanced waste treatment and recycling systems, with a focus on composting.
Morocco also plans to implement inclusive governance mechanisms, including carbon finance, active involvement of non-host regions, and the promotion of local expertise and craftsmanship.
“Our ambition is clear: to make Morocco a major player in global football and a leading African model of sustainable sports development,” Lekjaa said.
